Dr Neil Bird
Senior Director
Philips Research Europe
Dr Neil Bird is Senior Director at Philips Research Europe, and department head of the IC Design group. Neil holds B.A. and M.A. (Oxon) degrees in Physics from Oxford University , and the PhD degree from the University of Twente in The Netherlands. He joined Philips Research Laboratories in 1982 to work on the design of analogue integrated circuits for telecommunications applications, specialising in the design of switched capacitor signal processing circuits. A spin-off of this work was the invention of a new approach to the design of analogue sampled-data integrated circuits - Switched Currents - for which he holds the two basic patents. Between 1986 and 1989 he worked in The Netherlands at Philips Research Headquarters. In 1989, he began investigating new applications for the amorphous silicon thin-film technology used in active-matrix liquid crystal displays. He was awarded his PhD in 1999 for his research into large area amorphous silicon diode image sensors. From 1992 he was Senior Principal Scientist in the Display Systems group where he directed projects on drive schemes and circuits for very low power LCDs, designed improved drive schemes for CTLC displays, and patented current-based pixel circuits for poly-LED displays.
In 2000, Neil became head of the Wireless group at Philips Research Laboratories. In 2003, he became department head of the Integrated Transceivers Group in Philips Research Eindhoven, The Netherlands. He is currently Senior Director Philips Research Europe, and department head of the IC Design group. Dr Bird is the author of several technical papers and 30+ patents in the areas of CMOS circuit design, amorphous silicon and LCD circuit design, and wireless technology.
