In the capacity of Principal Consultant in TransGrid, Nalin is presently responsible for providing technical advice for transmission network planning in New South Wales.
From 2013 – 2016, he led the Power System Planning and Analysis group in TransGrid. The transmission planning functions include, assessing the capability of the existing network, ensuring augmentations are planned and justified, setting up strategic plans for the network, providing advice to the connecting parties and planning connections, and ensuring the performance of the power system aligns with that has been modelled and planned.
Prior to joining TransGrid in late 2012, Nalin was with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), where he held the position, Manager Network Models and was responsible for collecting, quality assurance of, and making available, the network and plant models to the NEM participants as well as for AEMO's business functions.
Nalin joined AEMO in 2010 in the capacity of the Manager, Network Capability, where his responsibilities included contributions to National and Victorian planning functions as well as providing planning advice for new connections, asset replacement, and refurbishment in Victoria.
From 2000 to 2010 he worked with Transpower New Zealand Ltd where he held various roles in planning and operations and was responsible for planning of several major grid augmentation projects and for development of several key operation policies. From 1990 to 2000 Nalin worked in the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where he held the position of Associate Professor and led of the power systems research group. From 1988 to 1990 he was a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.
Nalin is a member of IET, IEEE, Engineers Australia, and Cigré. He is a registered Charted Professional Engineer in UK and in Australia. He contributed to a number of industry working groups in New Zealand during 1990 – 2010 and was a member of the Power System Operations Advisory Group to the New Zealand Electricity Commission during 2006 – 2008. He has been a member of the Cigré Australian Panel on HVDC and Power Electronics since 1994 and was the convenor of the same panel during 2006 - 2014. Nalin convened the Cigré working group on "Connection of Wind Farms to Weak AC Networks", which published its technical brochure in December 2016.
Nalin Pahalawaththa graduated from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, with BSc (Eng) 1st Class Honours in Electrical Engineering. He also holds the degrees, a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Calgary, Calgary, Canada and a MBA from Massey University, New Zealand. He received the Cigré Technical Committee Award, in recognition of his services to Cigré in 2012.
