Electrical (Power) Engineering

Power Engineering at the University of Wollongong is comprehensive undergraduate program in Electrical Engineering which follows a top down approach in teaching as outlined below:

  • Year 2: Power Engineering 1 - overview of the power system, basics of power calculations, power system components including load behaviour, structure of the power distribution system, faults and control, customer installations, power quality and reliability, renewable power sources.
  • Year 3: Power Engineering 2 - electromagnetic devices including AC motors/generators including their behaviour, modelling and analysis, basics of power electronics, rectifiers, inverters and DC-DC converters, and basics of motor drives.
  • Year 4: Electives - Power Distribution Systems, Power System Analysis, Power Electronics and Drives and Thesis project.

Students also receive a solid education in many other aspects of engineering that are vital to modern power engineering, including computer control, telecommunications systems, electronics, circuit theory and robotics. Many of the subjects are supplemented by laboratory work and visits to relevent industry installations.

The University also has a strong postgraduate program and we offer coursework masters, masters by research and PhD by research programs. The University is home to the Integral Energy Power Quality and Reliability Centre, one of the longest running power research centres in Australia. It has received close to $3 million dollars in funding thus far from Integral Energy to support power engineering education and R&D activities in power quality and distribution system reliability.
